ELECTRIC MOTORS FOR THE ENHANCED HOT WATER DRILL PROJECT

(contract last updated 03/10/2006)

SCOPE:

The University of Wisconsin (UW) through its Ice Coring and Drilling Services (ICDS) has developed the Enhanced Hot Water Drill (EHWD) to produce holes approximately 8,000 feet deep in the ice at the South Pole. Eighty holes will be drilled over a period of several years and will be used by researchers to construct a telescope designed to detect muons and neutrinos.

The University of Wisconsin is planning to continue the purchase of motors and other accessories that will be placed at the project site. As a part of that effort, contracts will be established through bid and RFP processes to allow for ongoing purchases of items known to meet or exceed our contract requirements and the rigorous physical requirements of the environment involved at the South Pole scientific site. This contract is designed specifically to establish a contract with a Contractor to provide electric motors as needed for the project.

SPECIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements for all motors listed:
1. Rated Power: All motors shall deliver to their shafts the rated power listed at their base speed.
2. Continuous Duty: All motors shall be rated for continuous duty from zero speed to its base speed
3. Bearings:Motor bearings shall be rated for a 10,000 hour L10 life at the rated speed with the listed radial shaft load.
4. Supplied Power: All motors shall operate using 3-phase 480VAC line voltage at up to 60Hz as synthesized from an electronic drive.
5. Internal Wiring:The motor internal wiring shall have insulation rated as specific-purpose, inverter duty per NEMA MG-1 part 31.
6. Power Connections: All motors shall have three power connections and one non-current carrying ground connection. The motor shall not need a current carrying neutral connection.
7. Storage Conditions: All motors shall survive, without damage or degradation, storage at temperatures in the range of -112° F (-80° C) to 104° F (40° C) at any humidity, including condensation conditions.
8. Lubricants:All lubricants shall be rated for use with the motor operating at the temperatures listed. All lubricants shall remain in place under storage conditions. All lubricant properties shall be restored when returning from storage conditions to operating conditions.
9. Motor Type:
9.1 Induction Motors:If induction motors are proposed for motors requiring feedback devices, the feedback devices shall be 1024 line incremental encoders with differential quadrature output. All feedback devices shall be rated for the same environmental operating and storage conditions as required for the motors.
9.2 Permanent Magnet Motors: If permanent magnet synchronous motors are proposed for motors requiring feedback devices, the feedback devices shall be resolvers. All feedback devices shall be rated for the same environmental operating and storage conditions as required for the motors.
10. Thermal Protection: All motors shall have a thermal switch that will change states if the rated internal temperature is exceeded. The switch shall be rated for 2A at 24VDC.
11. High Altitude Requirements: All motors must operate to their ratings or be derated for operation at an altitude of 12,000 feet above sea level. Ambient temperatures listed in the table for motors located outdoors are for operation up to 3300 ft. (1005 m) above sea level. Motors located outdoors (as listed in the table) will operate in a maximum ambient temperature of +10 ° F (-12 ° C) when at this altitude.
12. Warranty: Warranty shall cover the cost of labor for one year and the cost of parts for three years.
13. Manufacturer Stability: Manufactures shall have been in the business of manufacturing motors for at least 10 years.
14. Contract Scope to Include All Motors: Proposers shall state whether they can supply all motors listed, including those not being purchased at this time.
15. Weight:
15.1 Motor Weight: Proposals shall include the weight of the 50 HP motors being proposed for the initial purchase.
15.2 Accessories Weight: Proposals shall include the weight of any accessories, such as feedback, devices being proposed.
