SPECIFICATIONS

SCOPE:  The following specifications represent minimum acceptable requirements of a soft RTV Gel required to integrate Digital Optical Modules for the IceCube Antarctic Neutrino Telescope.

1.0 Material Characteristics.

1.1 Component Parts Prior to Mixing and Cure.

  1. The GEL components must be water-clear and colorless.
  2. Components must be free of particulates greater than 100 microns.
  3. Viscosity must be:
    1. Suitable for pouring into a vessel.
    2. Easily mixed.
  4. Must require no thinning.
  5. Solvents.
    1. Must recommend safe materials for clean up if Atmex-CCR Silicone Remover is not appropriate.
  6. Shelf life of components.
    1. Must retain characteristics for a minimum of six months withoutdegradation.
    2. Sensitivity, shelf life must not be adversely effected by:
      1. Light
      2. Temperature
      3. Humidity
      4. Agitation
1.2 The following cured characteristics are expected to remain constant over the temperature range – 70ºC to 45ºC for a period of fifteen years.
    1. The GEL must be water-clear and colorless.
    2. UV Optical Transmission Rating:
The optical character of the cured GEL must pass a weighted transmissivity judgment in a Spectrophotometer. The tabulated measurements in the example below were conducted in a 4.5ml, 1cm2, cross section Quartz Cuvette.
    3. For purposes of Analysis and Compliance a Methacrylate cuvette may be used. Batch to batch statistics must be retained and judged with a lower control limit starting at the weighted sum value of 71 consistent with six sigma rules.
    4. The Vendor must provide an example ASCII data file as output by the vendor’s spectrophotometer. The University of Wisconsin will provide  a Windows based software program for the data analysis.
    5. Index of refraction of cured material must be between 1.4 and 1.5 at -70ºC and 20ºC.
    6. The RTV must not scintillate or fluoresce when exposed to UV light over over the wavelength interval 275nm to 650nm.
    7. The cured GEL stiffness must be measured with a precision universal penetrometer equipped with a 19.5 gram weight and a spherical tip of diameter ¼”.
    8. The penetration depth must be in the range: (2mm to 6mm).
    9. The GEL must not separate, delaminate, or crack post cure when subjected to ½ atmosphere of N2.
    10. The GEL must be chemically inert, non-corrosive, and safe in the presence of electronics.
    11. The GEL must be stable, (does not re-flow post cure).
    12.  The GEL must not shrink more than 0.1% during cure.
    13. The coefficient of thermal expansion must be less than 405 um/mC.

2.0 Shipping and Packaging

  • Sealed containers must be tamper proof.
  • Containers must be clean. Without evidence of contamination.
  • The GEL components must be packaged in five gallon pails packed in a cardboard box.
  • The five gallon pails must have appropriate nozzles that prevent spillage when used in a tip frame dispenser.
  • Each shipment must be accompanied by an Analysis and Compliance Certificate listing:
    1. Viscosity of each component (cps).
    2. Visual inspection (Pass/Fail).
    3. Gel Time (30-60min).&
    4. Penetration (mm).
    5. Percent Weighted Transmission (71min).
    6. Refractive Index (1.4-1.5).
    7. Non-Fluorescence (Pass/Fail).
    8. Date of Manufacture (Report).
3.0 Process Parameters (Must be safe using common methods).
    1. None or minimum degassing requirements.
    2. Room temperature set time less than twelve hours. The GEL must have achieved 95% of final hardness as measured by penetration test.
    3. Room temperature cure must be complete in forty eight hours.
    4. Must provide deep section cure.
    5. Mixing ratio 1:1 parts A&B, must be consistent with desired characteristics and packaging.
        1. The RTV must adhere to clean glass surfaces without the use of primers.

    4.0 Business Relationship

    1. Upon request supplier must demonstrate credible QA and process documentation.
    2. Upon request must agree to site visits, and process audits.
