VISUALIZATION SOFTWARE TOOL

(contract last updated 06/24/2016)

SCOPE: The University of Wisconsin-Madison has invested heavily in enterprise systems, in data warehouse infrastructure,  and in query and analytical tools. As a consequence, we have a robust data and information system. In addition, we have expert and highly skilled staff members who know how to turn all that data into information for decision support.  Educational Innovations has invited us all to be more productive, creative, and responsive. The initiative calls for the University to take risks, make an investment, and leverage our resources.

The goal is to purchase a software tool that will help us advance the needs of our campus community and leveraging data of all sorts.  This type of solution will allow analysts to put that data in the hands of decision makers in ways that are useful, accessible, intuitive, and with strong visual impact.

The goal of this initiative ultimately is to enable more information literacy across campus.  By providing an opportunity to visualize data and interact with that data, rather than just viewing it on a static tabular report, we would be aiming to allow for better insight into the data to make more informed decisions.

The tool that is selected has the technical capability to be used to visualize ANY types of data.  Initially, as part of the implementation, we would focus on administrative data – that which is InfoAccess.  However, as use of the tool grows, we would hope that users utilize the tool to point to other data sets as well.

The tool allows for publishing different dashboards or visualizations to a web portal.  Part of the implementation will be to set up the appropriate governance around how those visualizations are placed on the portal and how end-users would gain access to those visualizations.  Currently, APIR disseminates information statically to their user base.  This tool would help automate that process.
