SPECIFICATIONS

The Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Divisions of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) provide services to protect occupational and environmental health for the State of Wisconsin. The Environmental Science Section ("Environmental Lab") analyzes approximately 115,000 samples annually. The Environmental Lab performs analysis of environmental samples including drinking water, surface water, waste water, sediment, air, animal tissue, soil, blood, urine, food and hazardous waste for:

  • chemicals
  • microbiological organisms
  • biological metabolites
  • environmental toxicological responses
  • detection and research of environmental pathogens using flow cytometry
  • various parameters by molecular methods
  • radiological components

The Occupational Health Laboratory (WOHL) analyzes approximately 55,000 samples per year. WOHL performs industrial hygiene chemical and microbiological analyses on air, wipe and bulk samples.

Lab members who are involved with the environmental and industrial hygiene testing operations include:
~72  bench scientists performing analyses;
~6  employees who prepare collection kits or receive incoming samples;
~14 employees who oversee operations (QA officer, project manager, supervisors);
~8  employees who provide support services (e.g. clerical, glassware prep, purchasing)
