The coach will teach approximately 6-8 group lessons each week for a total of 22 weeks during the academic year.  The number of team members varies each year so the number of lessons needed each week varies depending on the number of team members. 

The University agrees to allow Contractor to travel to all riding shows during the initial term of the contract.  The University will have the right to select which shows Contractor may travel to in subsequent terms

Costs must be all inclusive. No additional fees, incidentals, meal reimbursements, or per diems will be allowed. The University pays for travel and lodging expenses at State rates.

A. Requirements:

  1. Must be an experienced hunter/jumper instructor.                               
  2. Must be able to recognize and teach an industry competitive equitation style.     
  3. Must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of huntseat equitation on the flat and over fences, safety, and effective communication.  A teaching demonstration will be required.
  4. Experience showing/coaching on the A or AA hunter/jumper circuit preferred.      
  5. Must possess an established system for teaching effective riding from the complete beginner (never ridden before) to advanced hunter/jumper riders.
  6. Must also possess the skill and patience to work with a variety of horses with a variety of abilities.
  7. Knowledge or experience with the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) preferred  but not required
  8. Established working relationships with other professionals in the industry is preferred.
  9. Possess good communication skills, ability to handle conflict resolution, and a willingness to work closely in a team environment with team captains and team members
  10. Ability to work with a variety of students in a respectful manner while still ensuring the competitiveness of the team.
  11. Ability to work respectfully within the student run, executive board structure of the Hoofer Riding Club, Hoofer Equestrian Center and UW Equestrian Team.

B. Scope of Service/Deliverables:

  1. Provide group riding instruction to the Riding Team in a manner that complies with   standards of the IHSA , the UW Equestrian Team and the Hoofer Riding Club
  2. Maintain regular lesson schedules.  Work closely with the Hoofer Riding Club Head of Instruction and the Team Captain to set the team schedule for each session.  Lesson schedule will be determined by the team’s need and ring availability, some early morning and evening sessions may be required.  The team may also request additional lessons, depending on the coach’s availability.
  3. Assess and determine the suitability of weather conditions for instruction and be responsible for canceling and rescheduling lessons for make-ups.
  4. Attend all Hoofer Riding Club instructor meetings.
  5. Attend all UW Equestrian Team meetings, and at least one Hoofer Riding Club exec board meeting per semester. 
  6. Work closely with the Hoofer Riding Club Head of Instruction to help maintain the Hoofer herd and may participate in horse buying and selling decisions.
  7. Adhere to all Hoofer Riding Club rules for horse use and document horse use the same day, as required.
  8. Follow all Hoofer Riding Club and Hoofer Equestrian Center rules.
  9. Act as a team representative within UW Madison and at other Universities.              
  10. Work closely with the Hoofer Riding Club Advisor on team and club related matters.
