Frequently Asked Student Loan Questions

  1. Q: I have a hold for an Exit Interview. What is that? How do I take care of it?
If I am re-enrolling, do I still have to complete my Exit? What will happen to my loan if I do re-enroll?

A: Please see 'Exit Interview at Madison or Green Bay' for more information regarding Exit Interview requirements. If a student is re-enrolling at the campus that granted the loan half time or greater, they should not have to complete their exit at that time. The student should contact the Student Loan office and will be returned to a student status.
  2. Q: Why are these loan(s) not included with my Direct/Stafford loans?

A: The Student Loan office does not service any Direct or Stafford loans. Please see the Student Loan Home Page for loans serviced by this office.
  3. Q: Why have I not received any notice of entering repayment until now?

A: The Student Loan office uses email as the main means of communication with borrowers. Notices regarding grace periods and entering repayment are sent electronically unless otherwise specified. All notices are sent from ECSI, so borrowers should ensure they have added ECSI to their trusted senders list to ensure proper delivery of these notices. Please make sure to keep all contact information up to date as well to ensure reception of all necessary notifications.
  4. Q: Are there any deferments/forbearance/cancellations I may qualify for?

A: View Deferments and Cancellations for information regarding deferment and cancellation options. Additional information regarding deferment and cancellation options specific to your loan are printed on your Promissory note.
  5. Q: What is ECSI? Is it reliable? How is it different from Great Lakes?

A: The University of Wisconsin contracts with Educational Computer Systems, Inc. (ECSI) for the billing and electronic processing of payments on your campus based loan.
  6. Q: Why haven't I received my loan disbursement amount for this fall/spring?

A: To receive a loan disbursement, a student must first accept their award in their student center. Once accepted, the amount must be approved, which will then generate a Promissory note to be loaded onto the ECSI website to be signed. See Promissory Note Signing. If the Promissory note has been completed, the student should see their award amount on their account within a couple of days (depending upon the loan type).
  7. Q: How do I make a name change or update addresses on my loan?

A: All updates to a borrower's account can be done online at their ECSI student account or by contacting the Student Loan office directly.
  8. Q: I would like to make a payment, how do I do this? Can I make a payment over the phone?

A: Information regarding repayment can be found on the Student Loan Repayment page.
  9. Q: Can I get confirmation my loan was paid in full?

A: Once all of a borrower's loans through the Student Loan office are paid in full, they will receive notice within six weeks in the mail.
  10. Q: Has my Credit Bureau reporting been affected?
Did you receive my forms for deferment/forbearance/cancellation?
Q: When do I enter repayment/ what is my monthly payment amount? What is the total payoff amount of my loan/?

A: For questions specific to your account, please contact the Student Loan office at (608)-262-1791 or Information specific to a student's account can also be found online at their ECSI student account by visiting
    • Q: I just made a payment. How long until my hold is removed?

A: It depends on the type of payment submitted. If a Short Term Loan is paid in full through money order, cashier's check, or cash, the hold can be removed right away by contacting the Student Loan office. If it was paid with a personal check, the Student Loan office must wait approximately three weeks to verify the check has cleared the bank to remove the hold.
    • Q: What should I do if I cannot make the payment on my Short Term loan, but I need the hold removed to enroll?

A: If a borrower is unable to make the payment on their Short Term loan to remove the hold, they may meet with the adviser who granted the loan about a possible extension. If granted, the extension will postpone payments until a determined later date.
