Instructional Academic Staff
Summer Term

Under Wisconsin Statute 36.27(3)(g), the contract with the Teaching Assistants' Association (TAA), and University policy, the University remits the full tuition for Teaching Assistants, Program/Project Assistants. Lecturer Student Assistants and Research Assistants and the non-resident tuition for certain Instructional Academic Staff and University Fellows who hold eligible appointments.

Students with these appointments are responsible for paying the instructional portion of their tuition in addition to their segregated fees by the tuition date shown on their bill, regardless of when the Bursar's Office is notified of the eligible appointment.

There is no 3 part payment plan for the Summer terms.

The following requirements determine graduate student eligibility for a non-resident tuition remission for certain Instructional Academic Staff.

Continuing Graduate students who earned Instructional Academic Staff or University Fellowship remission of their instructional and non-resident (if applicable) tuition, in the Spring Term:

  • Based on eligible Appointments, will have their eligibility carry over automatically to the following Summer Term of that same year.

  • Departments do not need to provide any additional information to the Bursar's Student Account Office for the summer tuition remission/waiver to occur.

An example of a student who has an eligible appointment for the Spring Term, but would become ineligible for the Summer term, is a student who graduated at the end of the Spring term and is no longer considered a graduate student for the Summer Term.

Graduate students who earned Spring Term Instructional Academic Staff or University Fellowship non-resident tuition remissions:

  • Eligibility automatically carries over to the following summer term for the same year.

  • Departments do not need to provide additional information to the Bursar's Student Account Office for the summer tuition/waiver remission to occur.

  • Students with these appointments are responsible for paying their segregated fees by the due date specified on the Tuition and Fee bill - regardless of when the Bursar's Office is notified of the eligible appointment.

Graduate students with Instructional Academic Staff appointments during the summer who did not have a Spring Term non-resident tuition remission:

  • Must have at least a 33.33% appointment for eight weeks during the Summer Term, or an appointment with a different percentage and length equivalent that meet the requirements to be eligible for a summer term non-resident tuition remission/waiver. (See formula below.)

  • The Bursar's Student Accounts Office grants these students non-resident tuition remission/waivers when notification is received from campus departments.

    • When possible, the Bursar's Student Account Office should be notified of eligible students before the start of the Summer Term, so students receive correct tuition and fee bills.

    • An audit is done mid term against the UW Appointment System to verify that students held the appropriate percentage appointment during the summer. Find audit details here.

    • Students who do not meet the requirements will have their non-resident tuition remission cancelled and are sent a tuition and fee bill for their non-resident tuition fees. (Eligible Instructional Academic Staff titles).

  • Use the following formula to determine if a shorter length with a higher percentage Summer Term appointment qualifies for a tuition remission/waiver:

    • A student must work a minimum of 33.33% for 8 weeks. 40 hours a week divided by 1/3 = 13.33 hours per week. 13.33 divided by the number of days actually worked = % of appointment.

Example for a student working 5 weeks: 13.33 divided by 25 days (5 weeks x 5 days per week) = 53%. The student would need to have a 53% appointment for 5 weeks to qualify for a tuition remission/waiver.

  • It is University policy that fellows or the sponsor of a fellowship will pay full tuition and fees in accordance with the residence status of the Fellow.

  • Graduate School was delegated the responsibility and authority to make a limited number of non-resident tuition remissions available to fellowship holders.

    • Priority is given to: (a.) Fellowships granted in University-wide competitions, (b.) contractual and historical agreements between the donor and the University and (c.) State funded fellowships.

    • To qualify for a non-resident tuition remission, the Fellow must receive a stipend equivalent to at least a 1/3-time research assistant.

    • Graduate School may also grant non-resident remission/waivers for Fellowships in areas that have been identified as campus priorities.

    • The Bursar's Student Account Office grants non-resident tuition remission/waivers upon eligible appointment notification from the Graduate School.

  • Departments with qualifying Fellows will find instructions for submitting authorization forms here.

  • Direct questions regarding the tuition status for Fellows to Grad School Fellowships Director, Linda Scholl - Room 231 Bascom Hall. Phone (608) 265-5522, or email lmscholl@grad.wisc.edu

  • When possible, the Bursar's Student Account Office should be notified of eligible students early enough before the start of the term, so students receive correct tuition and fee bills.

  • An audit is done mid-term against the UW Appointment System to verify that Fellows received the appropriate stipend level during the term to qualify for a non-resident tuition remission/waiver. Find audit details here.
