Instructional Academic Staff
Fall and Spring Terms
Under Wisconsin Statute 36.27(3)(g), the contract with the Teaching Assistants' Association (TAA), and University policy, the University remits the full tuition for Teaching Assistants, Program/Project Assistants and Research Assistants and the non-resident tuition for certain Instructional Academic Staff and University Fellows who hold eligible appointments.
Students with these appointments are responsible for paying the instructional portion of their tuition, in addition to their segregated fees, by the due date specified on the tuition and fee bill - regardless of when the Bursar's Office is notified of the eligible appointment.
NOTE: Since these students owe more than just their segregated fees, they also have the option of paying their fees in three equal installments throughout the term.
The following requirements determine graduate student eligibility for a non-resident tuition remission for certain Instructional Academic Staff.
Graduate students with Instructional Academic Staff appointments:
Must have the equivalent of at least a 33.33% appointment for the length of the Fall or Spring term to be eligible for non-resident tuition remission for that term.
The same criteria are used for students with annual appointments, to determine their eligibility as students with term appointments.
Appointment options to achieve an appropriate position include:
- A 33.33% appointment for 4 1/2 months (19 weeks).
- A higher percentage appointment for a shorter number of weeks that nets to the equivalent of a 33.33% 4 1/2-month appointment.
Average % = ((Actual %) x (Actual Duration)) / (4.5 Months)
| Rate to Use | Months | Monthly Approximation |
|---|---|---|
| 33.33% | for 4.5 months | (approximately 4 months 15 days) |
| 35% | for 4.25 months | (approximately 4 months 7 days) |
| 37% | for 4.0 months | |
| 43% | for 3.5 months | (approximately 3 months 15 days) |
| 45% | for 3.3 months | (approximately 3 months 10 days) |
| 50% | for 3.0 months | |
| 60% | for 2.5 months | (approximately 2 months 15 days) |
The Bursar's Student Account Office grants student's non-resident tuition remission upon notification from campus departments.
When possible, notify the Bursar's Student Account Fees office of eligible students early enough before the term start, so students receive correct tuition and fee bills.
An audit is done mid-term against the UW Appointment System, to verify that students held the appropriate percentage appointment during the term.
Students who do not meet the requirements will have their tuition remission/waiver cancelled and will be billed for the full tuition and fee cost.
(See the Procedure Section for detailed instructions).
