University Fellows
Fall and Spring Terms
Under Wisconsin Statute 36.27(3)(g), the contract with the Teaching Assistants' Association (TAA), and University policy, the University remits the full tuition for Teaching Assistants, Program/Project Assistants and Research Assistants and the non-resident tuition for certain Instructional Academic Staff and University Fellows who hold eligible appointments. Students are responsible for paying their segregated fees.
- The following requirements determine graduate
student eligibility for a non-resident tuition remission for
University Fellows.
- Students with these appointments are responsible for paying their segregated fees by the due date specified on the tuition and fee bill - regardless of when the Bursar's Office is notified of the eligible appointment.
NOTE: Since these students owe more than just their segregated fees, they also have the option of paying their fees in three equal installments throughout the term.
University Fellows:
- It is University policy that Fellows or the sponsor of a fellowship will pay full tuition and fee charges in accordance with the residence status of the fellow.
- The Graduate School was delegated the responsibility and authority to make a limited number of non-resident tuition remissions available to fellowship holders.
Priority is given to:- Fellowships granted in University-wide competitions.
- Contractual and historical agreements between the donor and the University.
- State funded fellowships.
- To qualify for a non-resident tuition remission, the Fellow must receive a stipend equivalent to at least a 1/3-time research assistant.
- The Graduate School may also grant non-resident remission for fellowships in areas that have been identified as campus priorities.
- The Bursar's Office Student Accounts Office grants non-resident tuition remissions upon notification from the Graduate School.

- When possible, notify the Bursar's Student Account Fees office of eligible students early enough before the term start, so students receive correct tuition and fee bills.
- An audit is done mid-term against the UW Appointment System, to verify that verify that Fellows received the appropriate stipend level during the term to generate the non-resident tuition remission.
- Students who do not receive a stipend equal to or greater than a
1/3-time research assistant will have their non-resident tuition remission/waiver
cancelled, and will be billed for the non-resident portion of their tuition and fees.
